Earth Day Celebration 2024
Join us as we celebrate our planet and give back to the parks and lakes that make the City of La Porte a beautiful place to live!
Tuesday, April 23 (Rain date: April 25)
8-10 a.m. at Fox Memorial Park
American RENOLIT, our sponsor, will kick things off with a ceremonial tree planting. After that, members of the community are invited to to help out with native wildflower planting as well as cleanup efforts throughout Fox Park.
As a thank you, native wildflowers will be given to volunteers on a first-come, first-served basis. To secure your plant, be sure to pre-register!
Event FAQs
What activities will be offered?
- RENOLIT Tree Planting: Our sponsor, RENOLIT, will be planting a tree as a symbol of our commitment to environmental sustainability.
- Native Wildflower Planting: Join us in enhancing the biodiversity of our community by participating in native wildflower planting.
- Fox Memorial Park Cleanup: Help us keep our park beautiful by volunteering for the cleanup effort.
- Wildflower Giveaway: We anticipate having a native wildflower giveaway. Please note that while we strive to provide seedlings to as many participants as possible, they are not guaranteed. Preference will be given to pre-registered volunteers who actively participate in the event. Distribution will be on a first-come, first-served basis. If you receive a native wildflower seedling but are unable to plant it yourself, we encourage you to donate it back to the native wildflower planting initiative.
Are there any unique volunteer opportunities?
We are seeking volunteers and organizations to educate the public on Earth Day and how to care for native wildflowers. If you or your organization would like to participate, please contact Emily Archambault at earchambault@cityoflaportein.gov.
Should I bring anything?
- Gloves: Protect your hands from sharp objects, broken glass, or potentially hazardous materials.
- Trash Bags: Bring large, durable trash bags for collecting litter and debris. Consider using separate bags for recyclables and non-recyclables.
- Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the cleanup process by bringing a refillable water bottle.
- Sun Protection: Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun's harmful rays, especially if the cleanup is during sunny weather.
- Comfortable Clothing and Shoes: Dress appropriately for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain.
- Snacks: Pack lightweight snacks to keep your energy levels up during the cleanup.
- Trash Grabbers or Tongs: If available, bring along trash grabbers or tongs to safely pick up litter without directly touching it.
- Hand Sanitizer/Wet Wipes: Maintain cleanliness by carrying hand sanitizer or wet wipes for quick hand cleaning during the cleanup.
- Small Garden Tools: Consider bringing small shovels or gardening tools to help remove weeds or clean up small debris.
- Camera/Smartphone: Document your cleanup efforts by taking photos before and after the cleanup to share on social media or with local news outlets to inspire others to join similar initiatives.
- Positive Attitude: Most importantly, bring a positive attitude and willingness to work collaboratively with other volunteers to make a difference in your community.
Please Note: While we intend to provide a limited supply of cleanup materials, such as gloves and trash bags, it is advisable to bring your own supplies. As this marks our inaugural Earth Day Celebration, the anticipated turnout is uncertain. Your preparedness and contribution are integral to ensuring a successful cleanup effort. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
Any safety guidelines I should know about?
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially when participating in physical activities.
- Follow Instructions: Listen to event staff and volunteers for any instructions or safety announcements.
