The LaPorte Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Merit Police Officer. Because the police department normally has more applicants than there are positions available, a competitive application process has been established. The position of merit officer will be offered to the best candidate(s) who are successful in the following testing areas: a written exam, interviews, and a physical agility assessment.
Eligible applicants must be between the ages of 21-35 at the time of appointment, with a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalency. Applicants must have no felony or domestic violence convictions and be able to pass a criminal background. LaPorte Police Department offers competitive wages with longevity pay increases and health insurance to include free access to a local medical clinic. All merit officers start with 7 days of vacation, 3 personal days, several holiday days, along with paid sick time. The LaPorte Police Department also has a take-home car program and use of the vehicle is allowed off duty with some restrictions. Starting salary is $42,128, increasing to $44,278 after completing the one-year probationary period with room for advancement with Rank and in different specialties. Law Enforcement Academy graduates are encouraged to apply.
