TransPorte is the City of La Porte's public transportation system. It is a demand-response system serving the city of La Porte. Call for a ride -- we will pick you up at the curb, and take you to your destination anywhere in our service area for one low price. All of our vehicles are handicap-accessible with wheelchair lifts, and all are powered with Propane.  TransPorte is public transportation and not a medical service provider. If a person is not capable of independent travel and requires but does not have a personal assistant, transportation cannot be provided.

Passes can be purchased from the driver or at our office. We accept cash or checks -- we are not set up for debit or credit cards, 

No Show Policy

TransPorte also has a "no show" policy, requiring riders to notify TransPorte at least two hours before a scheduled trip if they are unable to travel. With certain exceptions, such as cases of serious illness or a family emergency, riders who fail to travel without notifying TransPorte will be required to pay the fare for the missed trip before their next ride on TransPorte.

Policy on Service

TransPorte is a curb-to-curb service.  All passengers must be capable of independent travel. If not, passengers are required to be accompanied by a Personal Assistant or other attendants capable of assisting the passenger, including safely operate a passenger’s mobility device, if necessary.  The driver is not a medical attendant and must remain in the line of sight of the vehicle at all times. The driver cannot enter a building to pick up a passenger or deliver a passenger. 

Disability discounts are offered for those in wheelchairs, or for those who require a personal assistant in order to be able to safely ride in the vehicle. TransPorte does not provide these personal assistants but will allow them to ride for free.

How do I get a ride?
TransPorte offers curb-to-curb service in the city of La Porte, Indiana. Call 362-6565 to schedule a ride up to a week in advance, or to request an ASAP pickup.

How much does it cost?
TransPorte will take you from your origin to your destination for $3.25 (one-way). Seniors and those using wheelchairs can travel for $2.50 10-ride punch passes can be purchased in our office which will save you a quarter a ride. TransPorte does not take credit or debit cards.

Do I have to be a senior citizen or disabled to use TransPorte?
NO! Anyone can use the services offered by TransPorte. We are a Citywide, public transit service offered to all people in the area.

Is TransPorte a medical provider?
TransPorte is a curb-to-curb service. All passengers must be capable of independent travel. How do I get to Michigan City? or Purdue Northwest?
Commuter service is available weekdays from La Porte to Michigan City, and from La Porte to the Purdue Northwest Campus in Westville, with connecting service on to Michigan City. Once reaching the Marquette Mall in Michigan City, you can access Michigan City Transit, which also connects to NICTD, (South Shore Commuter Train) as well as Baron's Bus and Coach USA.

Is there any other option for transportation in the county?
The County Council on Aging, doing business as Paladin, provides services including transportation to seniors throughout La Porte County. Call 219-326-7889

 When does TransPorte run?
TransPorte offices are open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed Sundays. TransPorte is open on some holidays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call the office at 362-6565 for a ride.

Does TransPorte run on holidays?

New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day

  • TransPorte is open Holiday hours on these days:

Martin Luther King, Day, Good Friday, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, and on Primary and General Election Days. 

What if there is severe weather?
TransPorte runs in the City of La Porte, which has a tremendous record for snow removal. Still, there are times when a snow emergency will force the closing of roads. In the interests of safety, we are sometimes forced to close. Call the dispatcher at 362-6565 to find out.
