Activity Center for Older Adults
September 27, 2024 : Press Release
The City of La Porte Activity Center for Older Adults will temporarily move operations to the La Porte Civic Auditorium lower level, starting Monday.
The change in venue became necessary when the main meeting room utilized by the ACOA at Heritage Place was damaged after a plumbing issue last weekend. The space will not be available again for approximately six weeks. The ACOA has been closed since September 23.
With the temporary move to the Civic, all hours and activities will proceed as planned, according to Park Superintendent Mark Schreiber. The only exception is Wednesday, October 9, with the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra’s Drayton Family Children’s Educational Concert being held that day.
“While we are disappointed this program has been temporarily displaced, it is very important for our staff to continue providing activities and services for our older residents,” Schreiber said. “Thank you to Civic Director Brett Binversie and his team for accommodating the ACOA operations over the next month or more. And we look forward to seeing our members, and new members, at the Civic beginning next week.”

The Activity Center for Older Adults was started over 40 years ago by the late Sandy Friedman and late Nancy Terzino. By securing a federal grant they were able to convert the old fire station located at 910 State Street into the Activity Center for Older Adults. The ACOA was managed by the Swanson Center Board of Directors until April 1, 2022, when the La Porte Park and Recreation Department took the reins of operation through a grant received from the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte.
Our Activity Center for Older Adults is a place where citizens 55+ (as individuals or in groups) can gather for educational and recreational activities or simply come and socialize. One of our goals with the ACOA is to connect members to vital community services that will help them stay healthy and independent.
We would like to thank the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte for the grant received to continue the operation of the Activity Center for Older Adults.
The facility is now located at 901 Lincolnway, La Porte, Indiana. Calendars for the scheduled events are available on the right. For more information on the programs being offered, please call 219-326-5354 or email seniorcenter@cityoflaportein.gov.
