Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dancing includes smooth dances such as Rumba and Waltz, as well as rhythm dances such as East Coast and West Coast Swing, Hustle, Cha-Cha, Jitterbug and Night Club Two-Step. Meet new people, stay active, reduce stress, and develop body awareness with this fun class. Go to your next big event and actually be able to get up and DANCE! Class is held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Cummings Lodge (350 Grangemouth Road) annually October through May.  The cost is $70 per couple. Barre Classes

Barre workouts are designed to give you a long, lean dancer-like physique. While all Barre workouts differ slightly in structure, most combine elements of ballet, Pilates and yoga. Barre exercises rely mainly upon one's body weight for resistance and the moves challenge your core stability and balance.

Join certified instructor Becca Masters as she guides you through the highly effective sequesnces of toning and resistance exercises. The 4-week sessions are held on Mondays from 6:30-7:15 p.m. in the lower level of the Civic Auditorium, 1001 Ridge Street (enter through the door at the end of the ramp on Plain Street). Fee for the session is $30. Participants are asked to bring light weights (5 lb. maximum). Pilate balls are available for use.

Ceramics

If you are looking for a fun, creative outlet, try one of our ceramic classes. It provides a great way to get away and meet friends, all while making some unique projects for yourself or gifts for others. We offer pre-registered specialty classes as well as open classes, held in the Ceramics Room at the Civic Auditorium. The fee of the specialty classes varies per project and includes everything necessary to complete the project. The cost is $6 per class during the open classes. Also offering group classes for birthday parties, youth groups, or other organizations. Check back for a new list of classes.

 

Fundamental Drawing 

Learning how to draw what you see is a wonderful, rewarding activity. It can be done basically anywhere with a few simple tools. In this series, you will learn how to see and how to record what you see using different drawing techniques. The emphasis is on FUN and exploration in a no-stress atmosphere. In each class, you will be introduced to new art material and opportunities to use it to draw. You will build on your skills in a logical step-by-step method. You will start with black and white drawings and move into color drawings. Art instructor Laura Krentz is an experienced teacher of all ages. She taught Drawing, Painting, Calligraphy, and Visual Communication at La Porte High School for 18 years. She is an active member of the Duneland Plein Air Painters, the Land of Lakes Art Alliance, and the Lubeznik Center for Art. She has exhibited her work at the Chesterton Art Center, the Box Factory of Arts in St. Joseph, Michigan, the Southern Shore Gallery in Michigan City, the Art Barn in Valparaiso, and the Thaddeus C. Painting - Parties on the Gogh

We are thrilled to collaborate with Parties on the Gogh's owner Kristi Chadderdon for a variety of new inspiring classes! Let your artistic abilities shine by attending one of these new classes. Classes will change monthly, so keep an eye on this page! Classes have included painting, string art, Cricut® instruction, wood wall hangings. All adult instruction and supplies are provided in the registration fee. Minimum and maximum class size requirements. Photography Class

Explore, capture, create. Want to learn the fundamentals of photography? Have questions about your camera? Learn how to shoot photos like a professional. The cost for the three-week class is $30. Pottery

Pottery - Wheel Throwing

The art of wheel throwing is both a therapeutic and expressive way to create pottery. This class focuses solely on techniques in throwing clay forms on a pottery wheel. During class, students will learn to apply aesthetics, proper thickness, and craftsmanship needed to make functional pottery. You'll be guided by local artist Alayna Bublitz who has a Bachelor's degree in Studio Art with a concentration in ceramics. Learn the process of making, decorating and glazing your work. A class for all skill levels. The fee for the program is $95. We offer adult classes (ages 18 and up) as well as specific Children's Classes. All classes are held in the Ceramics Room in the lower level of the Civic Auditorium, 1001 Ridge Street, (enter through the door at the end of ramp on Plain Street). Sewing 101

Join the Steady Stitchers, a Purdue Extension Homemakers Club, for beginner's classes creating specific projects. Pre-registration is required at the Park Office. Call 219-326-9600 or visit 250 Pine Lake Avenue. Class size is limited and all supplies and instruction will be furnished. Class will be held at the home of the Steady Stitchers, 1640 First Street, La Porte. Call or visit the Park Office to register.

Beginner Sewing 101 Series

Stained Glass

Learn the art of stained glass, including all of the techniques involved in this beautiful experience. Class sizes are small to ensure individual instruction. The three-week class is held from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays at Cummings Lodge. The cost is $29 plus $75 for supplies and tools (except glass). Pre-registration is required with class size requirements. A beginner's pattern may be viewed at the Park and Recreation Office on weekdays from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. Check back for a new list of classes.

 

Yoga Classes

Yoga at the Civic

Yoga can help soothe the mind and lower stress levels by focusing the mind on the moment and movements rather than on external distractions. Yoga combines flexibility, strength training, and balance to create a mind and body activity that's a perfect addition to any fitness regimen. Classes are held at the La Porte Civic Auditorium (1001 Ridge Street).  Please enter through the door at the end of the ramp on Plain Street. Pre-register for the session and save. Walk-in cost is $10 per class (cash or check).

Adult All Levels Yoga Flyer 

Yoga on the Beach

All of the benefits of yoga but with the added tranquility of the beach. Classes will return this summer and will be held from 8-9 a.m. Fridays at Stone Lake Beach beginning in June 7 through August 2 (weather permitting). No class on July 5 or July 26. The cost is $10 per class (exact cash or check made payable to City of La Porte Park and Recreation only). Punch cards can be purchased at the Park Office (Visa/Mastercard, cash or check accepted). Classes will move indoors to the Civic Auditorium, 1001 Ridge Street, when cooler weather arrives.

Zumba®  Fitness with Gail

Ditch the workout and join the party!
Join the City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department and Zumba® Fitness with Gail for evening dance parties on Wednesdays (class information is below) from 6-7 p.m. Burn calories in a seriously fun fashion!
Class fee is only $6 per class if pre-registered.  Pre-register for a full session for a reduced fee.  Walk-in participants are welcome at a $10 fee (exact change or check made payable to the La Porte Park and Recreation Department). Throughout the summer months, join Zumba® Fitness with Gail for a FREE class at Unity Park (1010 Pine Lake Avenue) every second Tuesday of the month, beginning May 14 at 6 p.m.
